Mr. Nelson graduated from Gonzaga University School of Law in 1997.  After graduating law school, he returned to his hometown of Covington, Virginia , to practice law as a criminal defense attorney.  He, later, joined the Alleghany County Commonwealth's Attorneys Office as an Assistant Commonwealth 's Attorney.  As an Assistant Commonwealth 's Attorney, Mr. Nelson tried a wide range of cases including traffic, drug, embezzlement, and murder cases. 

In 2005, Mr. Nelson moved to Richmond to join the Computer Crimes Section of the Virginia State Attorney General's Office.  As an Assistant Attorney General/Prosecutor, Mr. Nelson prosecuted crimes against children and crimes involving computer fraud.  He also prosecuted these crimes in the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia as a Special Assistant United States Attorney.

Mr. Nelson teaches traffic law to other lawyers in the fulfillment of their continuing legal education mandatory credit hours.  Mr. Nelson defends persons charged with traffic infractions, including speeding, failure to obey traffic light, and failure to yield, and serious traffic crimes, including drunk driving, reckless driving, hit and run, and eluding a police officer in the cities of Richmond and Colonial Heights and the Counties of Chesterfield, Henrico, Powhatan, Hanover, Sussex, Dinwiddie, Prince George, and Caroline.
